Names Explained

Okaga - Bruce Arthur

OKAGA, the name of our A32, was the Ocala Soux Indian god of the south winds or warm breezes, a part of the plains Indian creation mythology. I, however, remember it from childhood days spent at a summer camp in Ontario, where, at counsel ring, the "chief" called on Okaga to light the counsel fire, and a flaming torch ( a flaming toilet role running down a wire from a high cliff behind the counsel ring) magically lighted the fire.

I thought this was a part of the local Algonquin/Huron Indian mythology, and was appropriate because I sail in Huronia waters on Georgian Bay. I later found that this camp based all its Indian lore on the writings of an Englishman man, Ernest Thompson Seaton. In the early part of the 20 century, he wrote about Indian lore and combined any North American Indian stories into one basket! Hence, we had totem poles and tepees in Algonquin park (definitely not part of local Indian culture).
