Names Explained

Dileas - Treat Hull & Deb Simpson

My wife and I purchased the bristol Aloha 32 "Meriah" in December 2003. In registering her under the Canada Shipping Act, we found that the name "Meriah" had been taken by a vessel in Victoria, BC many years ago. We wanted to avoid the numbers game of "Meriah II", "Meriah III", etc. so decided to rename her. My wife was an equestrian before a sailor and the name of her first horse was "Dileas", Gaelic for "faithful". When we searched the Transport Canada database to see if the name "Dileas" was clear, the Registrar of Shipping reported that someone had used the name a long time ago, but that it was free now, so we took it. In fact, we were the "someone's" who had used the name "Dileas" ten years ago for a much-loved Ontario 32.  On a related note, "Dileas Gu Brath" ("Faithful Forever') is the motto of the 48th Highlander Regiment of the Canadian Armed Forces. As far as we know, that name's not taken yet by a real vessel, but is likely to be found on our dinghy this summer.
