Rag Time - Bob Winter
I've finally decided on the new name for
my Aloha 30 (Hull #010). I never thought "Mystique 1" really
fit her very well, unless it was a pun on the amount of teak involved in the
interior.
I considered several Native American names (some of them were beautiful and very poetic in translation, but one has to consider that one may some day be trying to send a Mayday call, and does one really want to be trying to spell the boat's name under such circumstances?); I considered some Hawaiian names (Momi, which translates as "Pearl" — the color the hull is painted — but that seemed just a little too outré, as well as presenting difficulties with any onlooker familiar with the theories of Dr. Freud); I considered a name (Be-Ha-Wa) made up of the first letters of the three parishes I served whose combined largesse made possible the purchase, but that seemed really sophomoric and phony; I considered "Tiramisu," a delectable dessert I discovered at a variety of Italian restaurants in my last parish assignment, but there was the difficulty about the Coast Guard and Mayday calls again, as well as the fact that someone at the yacht club we just joined already took the name for his boat! Finally, however, a name popped into my head. I've always been very fond of the compositions of U. S. musician Scott Joplin, who more-or-less invented the "ragtime" craze of the early 1900s, and if one thinks of sails as (colloquially) "rags" then "Rag Time" celebrates Mr. Joplin's bouncy tunes which are a lot of fun and not meant to be played too fast (my hull speed is something on the order of 6.8 kt.), and is also a reminder that I now have time to sail — "rag time."
