"the Tardis" is a name stolen (but with proper footnotes) from the BBC series Doctor Who.  I've been a big fan for years of the Doctor, my wife not so much but she likes the name because, like the TARDIS of the TV series, our boat is "much bigger on the inside than it appears from the outside".
