Mastering
The Tight Turn
|
Over
the months we've had a lot of correspondence on the Aloha-List about the
difficulty of steering some Aloha models in reverse, and whether they suffer
more or less than other boats from "prop-walk". This trait can be used
to advantage in some circumstances, and Dennis Clarke has sent in a copy of an
excellent article on the subject.
As
Dennis says :-
"I saved this article from Cruising World March
1997 which seems to have been excerpted by them from Bareboat Cruising. It
describes how to manoeuvre your boat in a tight turn.
The method works and is well suited to the Aloha 28 (8.5)
with it's "hard to steer particularly in reverse" problems. I've tried
it and practiced it so that I can now turn the boat 360 degrees in virtually
it's own length. Well maybe that's stretching it a bit, but I can easily turn
360 within our slipway, and it's not THAT wide.
I thought it might help people in and out of those
tight spots."
