hi tim,

thanks.  any info helps.  that's probably enough info to justify the 2.5 hr drive to go inspect the boat.

fair winds,

I am using Interlux Schooner Gold.
There are some reviews of various varnish here: https://www.practical-sailor.com/boat-maintenance/paints/the-best-marine-varnish-exterior-wood-finish-tests

We shall see how it holds up, I imagine I will be redoing it every couple of years for the rest of my life.

What type of varnish?  I am experimenting with Waterlox Marine formulation this spring on some of my wood.  I recently built a kitchen table with furniture version and was impressed enough to try the marine version on the boat.  I have used Cetol in the past, but it looks like plastic after too many coats.

Hi Richard,

Sorry no dimensions in this email  I am 6' to 6'1".  I sleep in the v-birth.  There is just enough room to accommodate my height when fully stretched out..  I have to stoop slightly when in the aft portion of the cabin when the hatch is closed.  Hope that helps.

If there is no noticeable softness, I would drill the bolt holes out with a 3/8th inch bit.  Fill the holes with epoxy and re-drill with  a 1/4 inch bit.  (I am assuming you have 1/4" bolts like on my 8.2)  Then re-install the winches with a one-piece aluminum backing plate.  After that, go to bed, sleep well, and don't sweat it.

Aloha Discussion / Aloha 8.2 vberth dimensions and standing head room

hi all,

i'm considering an aloha 8.2 but i'm concerned about the vberth size.

can any of you 8.2 owners give me the dimensions of the vberth?  length from forepeak to aft end od vberth and the width at the widest point and width at narrowest point (forward) and length along the sides.

headroom dimension at various places would be great, too

also, any other opinions about the boat would be welcome, e.g. sailing manners, etc.

thank you in advance,

richard

Not too helpful but on my 8.5 the area where the winches are mounted is cored with plywood.

Those cracks look kind of nasty, you might want to pull the winch off and see what you got under there, it kind of looks like there has been some water ingress.
Probably a good idea to check those bolts for corrosion and at least rebed them.

Into a slight delay, hurt my back so that is slowing things down, decided to leave the wood off until after launch so no one scuffs it while its still pretty soft, some good thinking right there.

Also after a bit of thinking decided to order some new Harken ST winches, if I am going to drill holes in my new wood to mount the winches I figure I might as well upgrade my winches now rather than do this twice and have a bunch of old holes left over (filled the old ones).

On the plus side the boat is in the water and I now have a halyard for my jib installed, no mainsheet as I had to order a new one to fit my new 6 to 1 main sheet system, it should be on tomorrow I think.

Cockpit cushions are in the basement still, got them recovered this year, the vinyl was in pretty good shape for 38 years old but the piping was cracking every time I used them so it was time. The old vinyl did have quite a yellowish hue to it, it was old.

Are there any calibration switches on the tach?
There should be some on it somewhere, if you can find them borrow an external tach from someone and see if you can get it set correctly.

If I was lazy I might be tempted to just ignore it. Maybe it's been like that for decades.
If I continued to worry about it on windy days I'd probably build a bigger more solid backing plate for it.
If it keeps you up at night,,,yes,, I think you're into grinding it out and fiberglassing it again. It probably won't be as fun as it sounds here - given that you will be up side down in your locker.

I wonder if anyone knows whether it is balsa cored under the winch or if it is solid glass?

Best of luck.  Let us know how it turns out.
