Old Sailnet & Yahoo forum posts
« on: January 23, 2007, 11:54:12 PM »
My reply to a post earlier today with some quotes from a previous forum prompted someone to write and ask whether they were still accessible.

For those of you who have only joined us fairly recently, the background to the rather fraught history of the Aloha Forum may be of interest. When the Association was first set up in 1999 the website was hosted free of charge by Sailnet, who also provided an email based forum. In December 2004, Sailnet transferred their forums to new software and all messages prior to that date were lost. By August 2005 it was apparent Sailnet were about to go out of business (although they have subsequently re-started under new ownership) so I moved the website to another ISP and the forum to a Yahoo email group.

Unfortunately, several members reported that they were receiving only some of the emails from the Yahoo group and although I monitored this and was able to provide detailed evidence that it was correct, Yahoo claimed nothing was wrong! To take full control of the situation, we moved the Forum "in house" in February last year so that it is now hosted as part of our website. From that point forwards all messages will be retained and kept available for viewing and I hope this cures the issues once and for all, but I'm afraid the messages prior to Feb 2006 are mostly lost.

However, I had kept copies of some of the emails that those earlier forums circulated. I am going to take a look through the ones I have and will summarize and post those that contain useful tips or discussion that might be of interest but haven’t featured yet on this new forum.
