Coolant flush and refil
« on: May 06, 2019, 07:22:27 PM »
I’m going to be flushing my Westerbeke w21.  I see the block drain and heat exchanger drain.  Are there any petcocks or bolts to bleed air when refilling so as to be sure I don’t end up with airlock in the block or hoses??

Jeff.

Hey Chris.
I did this two years ago on my W21.
I drained using the top petcock on the exchanger and the bottom petcock down near the oil filter. When I filled I simply left the top one open. I didint notice any issues with airlocks afterwards. I'm not sure what I would notice but the engine ran much cooler after the cleaning of the system. (my exchanger was gummed up pretty good).
My concern was getting the lines to the hot water heater filled properly. I ended up rolling the tank around to move fluid through the coil. I don't know if this was required but everything worked afterwards.

Good luck
